Teenage drunk driving has become a real problem in Utah. According to KSL, more than 1,600 Utah teens got behind the wheel with alcohol in their system, causing almost 14 percent of all the fatal car accidents in Utah. A new campaign chaired by first lady Mary Kay Huntsman, aims to tackle this growing epidemic. TV ads featuring star University of Utah kicker Louie Sakoda, will speak to teens. His message to those who drink: “Punt the Keys” to someone who isn’t. The message they hope to send is that if you want to go somewhere with your life, whether a star kicker for the Utes or some other station in life, that you will need to sacrifice and be disciplined to get there. Making correct life choices, such as choosing to never drive while drunk, will help you reach those goals in life.
This is a great campaign and will affect Utah’s teens in positive ways. We sadly see too many role models who, by setting bad examples for the youth, affect them in negative ways, such as teen pregnancy, drug abuse, etc. There is an abundance of these negative role models, while there is a real shortage of positive role models. We could use more positive youth role models, such as Sakoda, who by their example help lead Utah’s youth in positive directions.
