Investigators identified Gregory Provost and Carrie Provost of Heber City, Utah, as victims of a deadly roll-over crash that happened last night on State Route 40 near Park City, Utah. Sadly, it appears that the couple were not wearing seatbelts since the two of them were ejected out of their Jeep Cherokee. According to a story on KSL.com, officers felt that the accident happened because the driver was traveling too fast for the icy road conditions. The couple’s minor children, a 10-year old and a 3-year old, suffered only minor injuries from the wreck and were treated at Primary Children’s Medical Center. The children in the back seat and the “estate” of the front seat passenger should probably be able to make a claim on the car’s insurance policy up to the limits that were taken out for the car. There is also coverage under the Utah policy’s PIP component for payment of medical bills and funeral expenses.
This crash is really the first major one for our Utah winter season. It is a reminder to all of us of the need to always, always wear our seatbelts and to slow down for winter driving conditions. I would also add another suggestion: get winter tires installed. Winter tires are basically insurance that keep crashes like this from happening in the first place. The all-terrain tires that SUV’s like Jeep Cherokee’s have, while good in the dirt and mud, are not good at all in snow or on ice.
