Four-Car Tooele, Utah Auto Accident Slows Commute

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

The commute on the I-15 northbound was slow Wednesday morning due to a Utah auto accident involving four cars. The accident occurred a t around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 in Tooele, Utah, reports the Salt Lake Tribune.

According to the story, a minivan was following too closely and swerved to avoid the car in front of it and hit a Toyota pickup truck. The Toyota then rear-ended a larger Dodge pickup. The Dodge then hit a Honda CR-V. The minivan caught on fire shortly after the initial collision.

There were no serious injuries reported but details continue to come in on this story. The crash closed the two left-hand lanes for a short time.

In my experience, most rear-end collisions happen because the following motorist is “following too close.” Drivers need to remember the “two second” rule that they learned in driver’s ed so that they are never too close to the car in front of them. We may never know why the car in front of us is stopping or slowing, but we are required under Utah’s traffic rules to be ready to avoid that collision. It is never a good defense that the person in front of us stopped too quickly. If we had been following the rules of the road, we would be prepared for such a contingency.

Vehicle Runs a Stop Sign and Hits a Home

Friday, April 10th, 2009

A vehicle slammed into the Hooper home of Ray and Maurine Hull, early Thursday morning. The vehicle was believed to being going 95 mph just before the crash occurred. The crash happened along 4000 South and 5100 West in Hooper reports KSL News. A GPS unit recovered at the accident showed that the pickup truck was traveling 95 mph before it ran a stop sign, hit another vehicle and slammed into the Hull’s home. “The crash shook the whole house, it scared my to death,.” said Mrs. Hull.

After they heard the noise the Hull’s ran into the living room to see the damage. She said she could see the wheels of a Dodge Ram through the side of her house, so she immediately called 911. Ray Hull said he could hear screaming coming from the truck. “I couldn’t understand what he was saying,” Ray said. “He was yelling and screaming. I was still in a tither myself, wondering what was going on.” A few minutes later emergency crews came and discovered the driver of the other truck, 31-year-old Brandon Rowe, lying in the street about 100 yards from where his truck ended up. Authorities are still not sure if Rowe was thrown from his vehicle or if he exited his vehicle to walk towards the house. He remains in extremely critical condition in McKay-Dee Hospital.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, 30-year-old Dylan Booker, and his passenger, 30-year-old Andrew Amacher were also taken to the hospital, Booker with minor injuries and Amacher with more severe injuries.

Ray and Maurine have lived in their house for 39 years and have seen several accidents at the intersection but nothing close to the severity of this accident. Officers believe alcohol was likely a factor in the crash. The situation continues to develop and we wish the very best for all those involved in this accident.

Hit and Run Driver Found Following Taylorsville Car Accident

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Misty Ostrander caught a rare break in her hit-and-run accident in Taylorsville. According to KSL News, Ostrander and her friend Jordyn Sommer were driving down 5400 South near 2200 West in Taylorsville, Utah, on March 30, 2009, when they were suddenly hit from behind. Sommer recalls not knowing exactly what had happened, just hearing the noise. After the initial shock from the car crash, they looked behind them to see the man who had hit them.

“I remember walking towards him to see if he was OK, and I could tell he was in there, and he was laying there, and then he looked around and floored it,” Ostrander said. Still noticeable shaken up from the accident, neither Ostrander or Sommer was able to get the license plate number before the man fled. In a fortunate break, Ostrander’s father noticed that the hit-and-run driver’s license plate number was imprinted on her bumper!

The owner of the car has since been located, but charges have yet to be filed because police want to find out who was driving the vehicle the night of the accident.
